Apple to Release New MacBook Pro and iPad Devices With Mini-LED Displays in 2020

Apple has been rumored to be making the switch from OLED to mini-LED display panels for a little while now. And that change could start happening next year.

According to a new report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors), Cupertino is planning to launch four to six products with mini-LED displays over the next two to three years. Kuo reports that the company will introduce at least two products with mini-LED displays in 2020.

Apple is apparently planning to introduce a new, high-end 12.9-inch iPad Pro with an A14X chip and mini-LED displays in Q3 2020. The company is also apparently planning to introduce a refreshed 16-inch MacBook Pro with the new mini-LED displays in Q4 2020.

It’s not clear how long we will have to wait to see iPhones with the new mini-LED panels.

In terms of the benefits, mini-LED displays tend to allow for slimmer display designs and are more power-efficient, while offering the same features as OLED panels, including a rich wide color gamut, high contrast ratios, high dynamic range, and localized dimming. They also apparently don’t suffer from burn-in like OLED panels, which are infamous for the burn-in related issues that occur over time.

Apple’s hardware timeline for 2020 is still too early to predict. The company will obviously release new iPhones, but the iPad Pro is due for an upgrade, and we will likely see a bunch of MacBook updates with the new Magic Keyboard. So yes, there’s going to be a lot of new hardware from Apple in 2020 as usual, but these new mini-LED displays probably won’t be available across the board just yet.
