Microsoft Celebrates 30 Years of Solitaire

Posted May 22, 2020 | Games | Windows

Microsoft Solitaire debuted 30 years ago today, and the software giant says it’s still used by over 35 million players each month.

“With a worldwide appeal, Microsoft Solitaire Collection, as it is known today, hosts over 35 million players each month, from more than 200 countries and territories, [and] in 65 different languages,” Microsoft’s Paul Jensen writes. “And after 30 years, Microsoft Solitaire is still one of the most played games on the planet every day, with more than 100 million hands played daily around the globe.”

Microsoft Solitaire arrived on May 22, 1990 as part of Windows 3.0, where it was first called Windows Solitaire. In addition to being a fun and addicting game, Microsoft notes that it also helped people learn how to drag and drop items on their computer screens using a mouse, a still-new interaction at the time for most.

Today’s Solitaire now provides several different variants of the game in addition to the classic Klondike game that constituted the original game.
